Some belief systems would tell you that desire is the root of all suffering, but I would not.
It is true that being attached to a specific outcome can be deeply painful, but desire keeps the heart of life beating. It was desire that caused the universe to want to explore itself, which led to our sitting here right now. It is my desire to write to you that makes this togetherness we are sharing. It is your desire to feel or know something deep within yourself that leads you to find these words today. We are brought to and from things in our lives by desire or lack of it. Yearning is holy, just as holy as attaining.
Desire is the fastest train in the universe and whether it takes us exactly where we thought it would or not, it keeps moving us and is fueled by the will of our hearts. We are not speaking of any old desire that walks into the saloon with an interesting face. We are talking about desires that burn from the soul. None is too small…any desire that truly burns from the soul has meaning, and a reason for being.
Even if this reason for being is to show us what we even want more deeply, the desire has led us somewhere important. We may indeed learn we do not want what we desired, but finding a truer, deeper calling is a treasure, and for that reason the road that brought us there is blessed, whatever pains we experienced upon it.
The more we desire something the more we pray, in whatever way each of us pray, and when we ask for something the beings and angels have even more ability to help us. Our yearning opens us to assistance even more deeply. It raises our magnetism and gives us energy to invest, encourages us to trust without thinking too hard about it. It asks us to lose inhibitions and take risks. For all of these reasons we want to be sure to always find out if our desires are of the soul, or simply addictions we are using to try to fill the void created when we try to leave our soul’s desires behind.
There are many reasons we leave these soul desires behind. Perhaps our parents taught us there were things we couldn’t have or do. Perhaps we had a dream but making money had to take priority to support oneself and one’s family, and the dream didn’t seem to accomplish both. Perhaps someone told us we weren’t any good at something we innocently loved. Perhaps we compare ourselves to others and always find fault in ourselves, and it holds us back from spreading our wings into the possibility of what our soul’s desire could become.
It is never too late to reconnect with the soul’s desire. Just watch what makes your heart light up, then try it, then just keep doing it over and over as long as your heart feels alive and excited. Some of these things you already do in your life, and some of them may be sort of tucked in the back of a drawer somewhere for the right day or time. Well I believe this is it. Perhaps take some time for yourself today and ask yourself what your heart truly desires in your life now, and see if you can find ways to let these desires blossom.
