The Ache to be Real

sibyl 3The Legacy of the Sibyls
Friday, September 21st, 2007

Once upon a time there were women who were almost human, but not quite so.

Their mothers were nymphs, and their fathers were human…they were not like everyone else. They could see things no one else saw, and hear things no one else heard. They could speak to nature as easily as you and I speak to one another. For this reason they gathered, and they gathered close to the lands of their Oracle-Mothers…close to the earth.

Because they could hear the voice of the mother earth, they began to speak her messages. These messages were prophetic in nature, and had the effect of drawing one closer to their own essence. And since they could hear Gaia so well, they also began to listen to her song…and sing it back to her. These Sibyls would live for sometimes hundreds of years, and live often deep in caves or at the mouths of springs. They were gloriously self-entertained.

A funny thing happened once they started to sing the song of the Divine Mother…they began to always speak the truth, and not to care what others thought. For this reason they did not share to please others, or to gather a certain result. They let the truth flow from them, and settle as it might. This is how they began to offer their prophecies by way of writing them on a series of leaves and placing them at the mouths of caves. If the person who had requested them did not come in time, the winds would scatter them. They usually spoke in enigmas to stimulate the use of one’s own heart as the guide. The quality of their answers depended on the value of the question being asked.

When someone did not understand them, they appeared fierce and dark, as did their prophecies…and when someone saw them with an innocent heart they appeared luminous and filled with utter grace. They did nothing to alter their appearance for others. They followed the voice within. They knew life would come and go. They knew people would think what they wanted anyway, as they always do…and they instead focused their compass on the divine. They had no need for praise or glory when they could sit in ecstasy for days on end as the vessel of the song of the Divine Mother, which ran through them like a sunbeam of bliss.

They lived until very few remembered, and the last women who carried the remaining bloodlines of the nymphs and the memory of all things were tucked away in temples to be visited only by kings and sovereigns and translated only by priests. They themselves grew weary, seen now as crazy old women who still followed a Goddess mostly forgotten, and held mysterious powers no one understood. But the leaves of the Sibyls still swirl through the air when the winds of change come, and their blood still runs, however minutely, in so many of our veins. We are these Prophetesses, these Oracles, these Ones Who Remember, regardless of our gender, and every time we give in to the ache to be real, we are saying yes to these ancient gifts, and welcoming the song of the Divine Mother back into our hearts.

As the leaves of change swirl about you this season, grab one every now and then, mid-flight, and remember the new world being born into the light of your great heart.

Love,
Jennifer

New Perspective

perspectiveSunday, September 9th, 2007

Outside my window it is one of the last, rare, glowing days of summer. My heart seeks to drink it in like the final drops of some sweet elixir for the soul. And yet a part of me is far away…or rather, far within.

A part of me is like the woman in this picture, sitting in a high tower looking out over a long distance. Somehow, though so many energies swirl around and below her, there is a strange and deep peace in that place of observation and perspective. It is like putting everything in one’s life on pause, so that within that pause a new course can be chosen. Before we ever choose a new course, however, we must always find the truest perspective we can…the perspective of the heart.

There are so many energies we are faced with every day in this world….people, places, things. And in these times they are amplified by the energies of great change we have been experiencing for the last several years, and will experience for several more. It can be overwhelming and can easily leave us confused and draw us off-course. We can be misled by the power of these energies if the anchor in our hearts is not strong enough, or if we are afraid to believe in ourselves, and trust in the universe.

This is why having clarity on our life and circumstances can be so empowering…it reminds us who we are and where our heart directs us to go. Coming up to the solar eclipse on the 11th of this month, and during the several days following, it is a wonderful time to find sanctuary, within or around you, which will allow you to have some perspective on your life. This will be very helpful to what I have formerly referred to about this time as being one of evaluating where we are right now in our lives and considering what we would like to change, let go of, or invite in of the new.

This is when we dream the new dream. And yet we may find it hard to do in the midst of the old ones. Just as we might find it hard to sleep or dream well in an uncomfortable bed. So if it is possible to take a retreat in the near future it would be excellent to do so. Of course it might be lovely to actually take a trip or some time away, but if that is not possible or desired, you could also just plan to take a hike, walk in the woods, boat ride, or trip to the ocean…in fact anything which breaks up the pattern of your daily life and exposes you to the perspective of nature or creativity would be of great benefit now. Indulge yourself with time for reflection. If you write, take extra time to write about where you feel you are in your life right now, and where you would like to be heading.

You may also simply set aside some time for self-nurturing or vision, which is always a wonderful thing to do more of. In fact, if you set aside a short time to rest and journey, you could imagine yourself in a beautiful place, climbing a high tower. When you reach the top you might envision a large window, or windows all around. Imagine that this space is filled with color and soft pillows or beds. It is a place you are made comfortable to rest or dream. As you look out the windows at the landscape, imagine that it represents your life right now…your relationships, environment, work, play, activities, routines, self-image, hopes, fears, loves…and so much more. From this place of soft perspective ask your heart how you feel about these elements of your life, and what it would like to ask for next, change, or dream new.

You may notice some resistance at times when you realize your feelings or desires, or if you think you may not be able to have or deserve them. Give yourself permission to have those feelings, and they will release when the time is right. If you keep giving yourself also the permission to dream new dreams for your life, that ability to dream will strengthen and become more and more potent and enlivened. This is a skill we will need for the new world, and for each of us in our new lives.

We have learned to forget our dreams, and now we must learn to remember them. To believe in what we have been told not to, and what we have been told cannot be. The soul defies all odds, as there is nothing the divine cannot create. I hope you will all find new birth of your gifts and beauties, your purpose and new visions in the coming days and weeks, and that the solar eclipse’s boost of energy may be channeled directly to your soul’s desire.

Love,
Jennifer
