I think the memories began with waking up on moss in so much pleasure…
My memories of being a nymph are some of the most precious memories I have…and I have a lot of memories.
In a world where the spiritual ideal is a man seated in a lotus position avoiding “temptation”, (or suffering on a cross), and nature and pleasure are largely ignored, the idea of female magical creatures who were all knowing, fully enlightened, omnipresent, omnipotent, and lived in states of pleasure comparable to varying levels of orgasm is…well, unheard of. That’s why I teach about it. Because I remember, and because the world needs this wisdom and this healing nectar more than ever.
But what does experiencing extreme pleasure (or any at all) have to do with healing the world?
Everything.
It starts inside. With how pleasure states heal the body, mind, heart and soul. With the creativity and imagination they awaken, the access they give us to our deepest knowing, and the power they have to bond us to each other and allow us to experience and share love, with ourselves or others. I could write a book about why accessing pleasure matters (well, I suppose that’s exactly what I am doing…), but the more important thing to talk about right now is how to do it.
Because no matter how wonderful pleasure states sound, especially if we understand their sheer, unmitigated power to change everything they touch, they feel almost entirely out of reach to most humans in the world right now. Most people live in a state of stress, trauma, grief and overwhelm, and are doing what they can just to function. Getting out of bed in the morning at all may be a life goal all its own, and something to feel good about having managed some days…trying to wake up in some state of pleasure every day may sound like, well, a bit of a cruel joke and at the very least a terrible stretch.
So that you know, I’m not suggesting you need to reach that pinnacle. Sometimes I wake up and cry.
But make no mistake…
I am a nymph.
It’s brave to be a magical creature in a human body. And that is what all of us are. I just happen to remember who I am, and am here on this planet to remind others so we can access the gifts we have carried so long and bring them into our lives and the world to replenish them. Because that is what we need to begin with. Replenishment.
Yes, it would be wonderful if we could have a complete cessation of stress (or even a major one) overnight, or suddenly be handed extra hours in every day to relax and reconnect with ourselves, and finding ways to make those things happen is a deep part of what I teach. But there is a way to begin to access this replenishment without those things…we have to remember something the nymphs were excellent at: building and maintaining a reservoir of energy. Tapping in to the limitless life force we were meant to know how to access and live from.
Then, while life may not always feel like a varying state of orgasm, I can promise you that your receptivity to pleasure increases, buffering you from and supporting you through times of challenge, and adding a bit of a golden glow to even the darkest corners of your life. And in the not so challenging times, it will allow you to reach the states everyone dreams of achieving, open you to your intuition, help heal your body, infuse your life with magic, and help you remember more profoundly the gifts you brought to give in this world with intense joy.
I sometimes think, after love, the thing the world wants most is magic. A true sense of magic restored to life. Not just in dreams, or visions, (though it’s wonderful there too), and not just the promise of it if you perfect a spiritual practice or meditate in a cave for decades.
Finding the way back to your life force, especially in the midst of stress and overwhelm, is like finding the right key for a lock. Once you turn it and open the door the journey will show you the way on its own. The key to rediscovering what I call your “origin energy”, or deepest life force essence, is to find and run your fingers along the perhaps one last thing that still speaks to your heart.
The one thing that, despite all possible devastation, still lights your light…even a little bit. The thing or few things you want and you can still feel the wanting for. And if you can’t find it, it means getting up every day and keeping your eyes open for it, or really just waiting for it to find you…as if leaving a lamp in the window for it in your heart. Then, all you have to do is notice it, and follow it.
Noticing it at all is a very huge and critically important step to be celebrated wildly when it happens…it is finding the key. But finding it is not enough, you have to use it. You have to actually follow where it leads you after it opens a door in you, and to do so you have to learn to hear its voice, and to trust it, and to act in alignment with it, even when it seems crazy to the rest of the world or to your rational mind. Maybe you are already a pro at this, but I promise you can be even better at it. And I promise it will saturate your life with so much more magic…it will enchant the life you live with the magic from within you as it radiates out. I know because it is the life I live, and I am always getting better at it and experiencing new levels of that enchantment, and meaning, and the dumbfounded, staggering gratitude it creates in me.
I used the words “run your fingers along” the thing you most want when you find it, because that’s what it’s like to follow it. It’s not enough to find something in the box and close it again, even if you lingered over it for a moment. You can certainly visit it that way for a while until it feels safe to do more, but then one day when you’re ready you have to take it out of the box, slide your fingers along it, perhaps even a bit recklessly, and slip it into your pocket to take with you everywhere you go.
One day, you might even wear it.
The image with this writing is not a usual depiction of a nymph, since they are usually surrounded by nature. But in this painting the nymphs are surrounded by the spoils of a shipwreck in a sea cave. We too need to find the spoils in the wreckage we may feel we are experiencing in our lives or the world. The salvage. To salvage means to rescue, and our rescue is likely not in the place we expect it. It’s in rediscovering what feels good and letting it nurture and nourish you back to life, and return you to your own true nature so that miracles are possible…both for you and the world.
The nymph in the painting has her hand on a pearl necklace. It’s the thing she is exploring from the box. She is exploring it sensually, reminding us to feel it when we find it…
To begin, you have to find your pearl necklace. You have to find your moss.
What’s the one thing you love and that makes you believe in life? What’s the thing that still strike a bit of lightning in your heart, or starts a buzz in some deep place you can’t name? What draws you like a bee to a flower?
Don’t worry if you aren’t sure at first, or if the thing(s) that you discover move you seem mundane. Take any hint of glow…any spark of light…as a wonderful sign on the path. And look for more, like fireflies gleaming on a warm summer night.
If it feels like winter in your life, do everything you can just to keep yourself warm, and perhaps dream of summer nights and fireflies, but without pushing yourself at a time your inner ground is dormant. Let the dream of it give you courage and hope to withstand what you are facing now.
And when you do find it and make contact with it, that thing that makes you feel your deep want, it will begin to feed you, and lead you to the life of your innate design, even in a world that was not made for it. And that is how we will remake the world. We will redesign it around our inner design. The world within, and the world around us. This is how we will tap back in to the energy that changes everything, and have the richest of gifts drawn out of us to infuse our lives with the wondrous magic we were meant to know and to live in.
This is how we begin to remember how to be a nymph.
Just one pearl at a time…
Love, Jennifer
